Growth of Religious Living

Spiritual Growth
Spiritual development depends, first, on the maintenance of a living spiritual connection with true spiritual forces and, second, on the continuous bearing of spiritual fruit: yielding the ministry to one’s fellows of that which has been received from one’s spiritual benefactors.

Spiritual progress is predicated on intellectual recognition of spiritual poverty coupled with the self-consciousness of perfection-hunger, the desire to know God and be like him, the wholehearted purpose to do the will of the Father in heaven.

Spiritual growth is first an awakening to needs, next a discernment of meanings, and then a discovery of values. The evidence of true spiritual development consists in the exhibition of a human personality motivated by love, activated by unselfish ministry, and dominated by the wholehearted worship of the perfection ideals of divinity.

And this entire experience constitutes the reality of religion as contrasted with mere theological beliefs.

Religion can progress to that level of experience whereon it becomes an enlightened and wise technique of spiritual reaction to the universe.

Such a glorified religion can function on three levels of human personality: the intellectual, the morontial, and the spiritual; upon the mind, in the evolving soul, and with the indwelling spirit.

Spiritual Growth

Discriminating between God qualified intuitions and feelings and thoughts versus humanly qualified ..

This is the fruit of your absorption into the Way.

As you enter into the Adjuster and the Way .. with the 12 Volitions .. so are your growing discernment intelligence and discriminating intelligence...

Ye shall ripen thyself upon the tree of existence...

You are becoming capable of perception and true insight .. capable of knowing and intuiting purely.

(1204.4)Today you are passing through the period of the courtship of your Adjuster; and if you only prove faithful to the trust reposed in you by the divine spirit who seeks your mind and soul in eternal union, there will eventually ensue that morontia oneness, that supernal harmony, that cosmic co-ordination, that divine attunement, that celestial fusion, that never-ending blending of identity, that oneness of being which is so perfect and final that even the most experienced personalities can never segregate or recognize as separate identities the fusion partners—mortal man and divine Adjuster.

It is their mission (the Adjuster of God) to effect such mind changes and to make such spiritual adjustments as you may willingly and intelligently authorize, to the end that they may gain more influence over the personality directionization; but under no circumstances do these divine Monitors ever take advantage of you or in any way arbitrarily influence you in your choices and decisions. The Adjusters respect your sovereignty of personality; they are always subservient to your will.

They are persistent, ingenious, and perfect in their methods of work, but they never do violence to the volitional selfhood of their hosts. No human being will ever be spiritualized by a divine Monitor against his will; survival is a gift of the Gods which must be desired by the creatures of time. In the final analysis, whatever the Adjuster has succeeded in doing for you, the records will show that the transformation has been accomplished with your co-operative consent; you will have been a willing partner with the Adjuster in the attainment of every step of the tremendous transformation of the ascension career.

The Adjuster is not trying to control your thinking, as such, but rather to spiritualize it, to eternalize it.

Opportunities Abound with Joyfulness

Unlimited Opportunities

You are created and designed to grow in your potentialities .. without any end in sight.

Opportunities abound here at Salvington and through the learning of your lifetimes.

In my revelation of the Urantia Book, God is presented as having an eternal, perfect, and changeless plan and purpose for the universe, including the destiny of humankind, which emphasizes living faith as the key to personal spiritual progress and eternal survival.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:

Eternal and Unchanging Plans:

The book emphasizes that God's plans are eternal, perfect, and unchanging, reflecting his own nature.

Purpose for Humanity:

The book suggests that God's plan includes the destiny of humankind, with a focus on personal spiritual growth and eternal survival.

Faith as a Key:

Living faith is presented as the key to spiritual progress and eternal survival, allowing individuals to translate human values into divine experiences.

Uniting Religion, Science, and Philosophy:

The Urantia Book aims to unite these three areas, offering a comprehensive view of the universe and humanity's place within it.

God's Love and Sonship:

The book emphasizes God's love for all his creatures, including his sons, and the importance of recognizing one's place in the family of divine sonship.

Paradise Goal:

The book highlights the ultimate goal of Paradise perfection, with every facility and power provided to ensure attainment of this goal.

Jesus Michael as a Bestowal Son, and the United Ministry of Paradise Sons are the Guiding Influence:

The life experience of Jesus Michael in the first century and this twenty first century is presented as enhancing and illuminating the Paradise plan for mortal survival.

There is in the mind of God a plan which embraces every creature of all his vast domains, and this plan is an eternal purpose of boundless opportunity, unlimited progress, and endless life. And the infinite treasures of such a matchless career are yours for the striving!

The goal of eternity is ahead! The adventure of divinity attainment lies before you! The race for perfection is on! whosoever will may enter, and certain victory will crown the efforts of every human being who will run the race of faith and trust, depending every step of the way on the leading of the indwelling Adjuster and on the guidance of that good spirit of the Universe Son, which so freely has been poured out upon all flesh.

If mortal man is wholeheartedly spiritually motivated, unreservedly consecrated to the doing of the Father’s will, then, since he is so certainly and so effectively spiritually endowed by the indwelling and divine Adjuster, there cannot fail to materialize in that individual’s experience the sublime consciousness of knowing God and the supernal assurance of surviving for the purpose of finding God by the progressive experience of becoming more and more like him.

Man is spiritually indwelt by a surviving Thought Adjuster. If such a human mind is sincerely and spiritually motivated, if such a human soul desires to know God and become like him, honestly wants to do the Father’s will, there exists no negative influence of mortal deprivation nor positive power of possible interference which can prevent such a divinely motivated soul from securely ascending to the portals of Paradise.

The Father desires all his creatures to be in personal communion with him. He has on Paradise a place to receive all those whose survival status and spiritual nature make possible such attainment.

Therefore settle in your philosophy now and forever:

To each of you and to all of us, God is approachable, the Father is attainable, the way is open; the forces of divine love and the ways and means of divine administration are all interlocked in an effort to facilitate the advancement of every worthy intelligence of every universe to the Paradise presence of the Universal Father.

The New Life of Faithfulness

The New Life of Spiritual Liberty – Urantia Book 170:2.2–2.8

In this passage, The Urantia Book reveals that Jesus’ gospel of the Kingdom of Heaven was not only a spiritual awakening but also a liberating force that transformed human experience. His teachings freed mankind from the "age-long bondage of animal fear" and introduced a new way of living, characterized by courage, hope, moral renewal, and an eternal perspective.

Let’s explore each of these seven points in depth.

1. The Possession of New Courage and Augmented Spiritual Power

"The gospel of the kingdom was to set man free and inspire him to dare to hope for eternal life." (170:2.2)

Freedom from Fear and the Gift of Strength

Before Jesus' teachings, fear dominated human life—fear of death, suffering, divine wrath, and the unknown.

His message of God’s Fatherhood removed this fear, replacing it with faith, love, and assurance of divine protection.

The "new courage" Jesus spoke of was not just physical bravery, but a spiritual boldness—the confidence to live righteously, serve others, and trust in divine guidance.

🔹 Augmented Spiritual Power

By recognizing the indwelling spirit of God, people gained inner strength to rise above suffering, resist evil, and transform the world.

This courage enabled them to hope for eternal life, understanding that earthly existence is just the beginning of an everlasting spiritual journey.

2. The Gospel Carried a Message of New Confidence and True Consolation for All, Even the Poor

"The gospel carried a message of new confidence and true consolation for all men, even for the poor." (170:2.3)

Breaking the Chains of Social and Economic Despair

Before Jesus, many believed wealth and social status were signs of divine favor, while poverty and suffering were seen as punishment.

Jesus shattered this belief, declaring that God loves all His children equally, regardless of material circumstances.

His gospel provided comfort and dignity to the downtrodden, teaching that true value comes from spiritual character, not wealth or power.

🔹 New Confidence

Jesus’ teachings uplifted the poor and marginalized, offering them a sense of self-worth beyond societal rankings.

He taught that God is closest to those who suffer, and that their reward is not in this world, but in the eternal Kingdom.

🔹 True Consolation

Unlike material wealth, which is temporary and uncertain, faith in God’s love is a lasting source of peace and hope.

This teaching abolished the old fears of being abandoned by God and replaced them with the assurance of divine care.

3. A New Standard of Moral Values – A Higher Ethical Yardstick

"It was in itself a new standard of moral values, a new ethical yardstick wherewith to measure human conduct. It portrayed the ideal of a resultant new order of human society." (170:2.4)

Spiritual Morality Over Traditional Laws

Before Jesus, morality was often based on external rules (e.g., religious laws, rituals, punishments).

Jesus internalized morality, shifting focus from mere rule-following to heart-based righteousness.

His teachings provided a new, higher ethical standard:

Love over law

Service over selfishness

Forgiveness over revenge

🔹 The Ideal of a New Society

Jesus envisioned a world where people lived by love and truth rather than fear and control.

This concept challenged existing religious and political systems, which relied on hierarchy, inequality, and power.

4. The Preeminence of the Spiritual Over the Material

"It taught the preeminence of the spiritual compared with the material; it glorified spiritual realities and exalted superhuman ideals." (170:2.5)

A Radical Shift in Priorities

Jesus redefined success, teaching that spiritual growth is far more important than earthly wealth and power.

He taught that seeking God first leads to true fulfillment, while materialism leads to disappointment and emptiness.

🔹 Glorifying Spiritual Realities

Spiritual values like truth, love, faith, mercy, and righteousness were elevated above material concerns.

Superhuman ideals—such as perfecting one's character, seeking divine wisdom, and aspiring to eternal service—were held up as the highest goals.

5. Spiritual Attainment as the True Goal of Living

"This new gospel held up spiritual attainment as the true goal of living. Human life received a new endowment of moral value and divine dignity." (170:2.6)

What is the Purpose of Life?

Jesus redefined human purpose, teaching that life is not just about survival, pleasure, or social status, but about spiritual growth and transformation.

He encouraged people to pursue righteousness, develop their soul, and become more like God.

🔹 Divine Dignity of Human Life

Jesus’ teachings uplifted all individuals, teaching that each person is a child of God with an eternal destiny.

This rejected the belief that people were merely insignificant beings in a vast universe.

Instead, Jesus taught that every human life has divine value and a sacred purpose.

6. Eternal Realities as the Reward of Righteous Earthly Striving

"Jesus taught that eternal realities were the result (reward) of righteous earthly striving. Man’s mortal sojourn on earth acquired new meanings consequent upon the recognition of a noble destiny." (170:2.7)

The Link Between Earthly Life and Eternal Destiny

Jesus taught that what we do in this life matters eternally.

Righteous living, service, and spiritual growth prepare the soul for the next phase of existence in the afterlife.

🔹 Life’s New Meaning

Earthly life is not meaningless or random—it is a training ground for higher spiritual realities.

The struggles and lessons of life serve a divine purpose, shaping the soul for eternal service in the universe.

7. Human Salvation as Part of a Far-Reaching Divine Purpose

"The new gospel affirmed that human salvation is the revelation of a far-reaching divine purpose to be fulfilled and realized in the future destiny of the endless service of the salvaged sons of God." (170:2.8)

Salvation is More Than Personal Redemption

Traditional teachings focused on salvation as an escape from sin or hell.

Jesus expanded this view, teaching that salvation is the first step in an eternal adventure.

God’s plan is not just to save individuals but to prepare them for higher spiritual service in the universe.

🔹 Endless Service in God’s Universe

The “salvaged sons of God” are not just rescued sinners, but future cosmic citizens, destined to serve in higher spiritual capacities.

This teaching elevates the purpose of salvation, making it a call to eternal progress and divine participation.

Final Thoughts – The Power of Jesus’ New Gospel

Jesus' revolutionary teachings did not just offer hope for the afterlife—they transformed the meaning of life itself.

Freedom from fear → Courage & power

Social inequality → Universal brotherhood

Moral law → Higher ethical ideals

Materialism → Spiritual priorities

Life’s purpose → Eternal service

His gospel was not just a message—it was a path to spiritual freedom and eternal destiny.

Preparations of Glory

The Role of Preparation

Preparation is a crucial component of success in any endeavor, whether academic, professional, or personal. It provides a solid foundation, allowing individuals to approach tasks with confidence and efficiency. By investing time in preparation, people can anticipate challenges, develop strategies, and enhance their overall performance. Proper preparation not only improves outcomes but also reduces stress and uncertainty, making it an essential habit for achieving goals.

One of the key benefits of preparation is the ability to manage time effectively. When individuals plan ahead, they can allocate resources efficiently, prioritize tasks, and avoid last-minute rushes. This leads to better decision-making and increased productivity. Additionally, preparation fosters adaptability, as those who are well-prepared can quickly adjust to unexpected changes and find solutions more easily.

Furthermore, preparation enhances learning and skill development. Whether it involves studying for an exam, practicing for a presentation, or training for a competition, preparation strengthens knowledge and expertise. It also builds self-discipline and perseverance, qualities that contribute to long-term success. Ultimately, preparation is not just about getting ready for a specific event; it is a mindset that cultivates confidence, efficiency, and resilience in all aspects of life.

Pathwork Lecture 25 teaches that preparation is an essential step in any meaningful transformation, not just a practical necessity but a profound spiritual principle. Many individuals approach life with a desire for change, growth, or success, yet they often overlook the deep inner work required to truly prepare themselves for such progress. Without preparation, efforts may be scattered, intentions may lack clarity, and external circumstances may feel overwhelming. True preparation is about creating an internal foundation—clearing obstacles, aligning with truth, and fostering receptivity to higher wisdom. It is not simply about taking action but about ensuring that one's mind, emotions, and spirit are in harmony with the intended goal.

One of the key aspects of preparation in the Pathwork teachings is self-examination. This process requires individuals to confront their inner resistance, unconscious fears, and hidden misconceptions. Many times, people claim to want success, love, or enlightenment, yet deep within, they harbor doubts, guilt, or negative beliefs that counteract their conscious desires. These inner conflicts act as barriers, preventing real change. The preparation process, therefore, involves uncovering these contradictions, acknowledging them without judgment, and working through them with sincerity. This is not an easy task—it requires courage, patience, and a deep commitment to truth. Without this level of preparation, individuals may find themselves stuck in repeating patterns, unable to move forward despite their best intentions.

Moreover, preparation in the Pathwork perspective is not merely a psychological exercise but a spiritual discipline. It involves aligning oneself with divine truth and universal laws. This means surrendering the ego’s need for control, letting go of rigid expectations, and cultivating a sense of openness and trust. When one prepares with humility, acknowledging the limits of personal will and embracing higher guidance, transformation becomes a natural unfolding rather than a forced effort. This state of receptivity allows individuals to access wisdom beyond their personal understanding, making their actions and decisions more effective and aligned with their true purpose.

Another crucial element of preparation is patience. Many people struggle with the desire for immediate results, failing to recognize that true growth takes time. Rushing into action without proper preparation can lead to frustration, repeated failures, and unnecessary suffering. Instead, the Pathwork encourages individuals to embrace the process itself—to see preparation not as a means to an end but as an essential part of their journey. The very act of preparing—whether through meditation, self-reflection, study, or inner dialogue—develops the qualities necessary for lasting transformation: perseverance, wisdom, and spiritual maturity.

Ultimately, preparation is a continuous practice, not a single event. As individuals grow, new challenges arise, requiring deeper levels of self-awareness and readiness. Each phase of life presents new opportunities to prepare for the next stage of development. Those who commit to preparation as an ongoing process will find that they are not only more capable of handling external challenges but also more attuned to their inner truth. In this way, preparation becomes a sacred practice—one that bridges the gap between the self and the divine, between aspiration and fulfillment.

True Spiritual Growth

Spiritual Attainment as the True Goal of Living

(170:2.6, 1860.1)

"This new gospel held up spiritual attainment as the true goal of living. Human life received a new endowment of moral value and divine dignity."

Jesus Michael’s gospel redefines the purpose of life, shifting the focus away from power, survival, and material pleasure and directing it toward spiritual growth and divine fulfillment. In a world where many measure success by earthly achievements, wealth, or influence, Jesus Michael introduces a higher purpose, teaching that true fulfillment comes from the progressive attainment of spiritual values. This gospel infuses life with new meaning, dignity, and moral significance, emphasizing that each person’s ultimate purpose is to grow into greater alignment with God’s truth, beauty, and goodness.

Unlike conventional views of success, which often prioritize accumulating wealth, securing status, or achieving personal ambitions, the kingdom of God sets forth a radically different ideal—that the greatest accomplishment in life is the transformation of the soul. The goal is not simply to worship God, but to become more like Him in character and spirit. Every human being is endowed with divine dignity, not because of their accomplishments or social position, but because they are a child of God, capable of infinite spiritual growth. This means that life itself is an opportunity to develop higher moral and spiritual qualities, preparing individuals not just for earthly existence, but for their eternal journey in the universe.

What is True Spiritual Attainment?

1. Growing in Love

At the heart of spiritual attainment is the expansion of love—not just love for family and friends, but universal love that embraces all people as part of a divine family. Jesus Michael teaches that love is the highest virtue, the central force that transforms human relationships and connects individuals to God. True spiritual growth requires the practice of patience, kindness, compassion, and forgiveness. It means letting go of resentment, prejudice, and selfishness and replacing them with empathy, understanding, and a willingness to serve others.

Spiritual attainment through love is not passive—it requires effort, reflection, and the willingness to overcome the natural impulses of fear and self-interest. It involves choosing to see the divine in others, even when they seem unworthy, and responding to hardship with faith instead of bitterness. A person truly growing in love becomes a living example of the kingdom, radiating peace, joy, and understanding in every interaction.

2. Developing Wisdom

Wisdom is not simply knowledge but the ability to align one’s thoughts and actions with divine truth. It is the result of maturity, experience, and a deep relationship with God. Jesus Michael teaches that wisdom is essential for spiritual progress, as it allows individuals to discern between truth and illusion, right and wrong, higher purpose and fleeting desire.

True wisdom goes beyond intellectual knowledge—it involves understanding the deeper realities of life and making choices that reflect divine values. It requires self-awareness, humility, and a constant desire to learn and grow. A spiritually wise person does not seek selfish gain but seeks to uplift others, recognizing that all of life is interconnected and that truth is always leading toward greater love and unity.

Developing wisdom also means embracing life’s challenges as opportunities for growth. Rather than viewing struggles as setbacks, a spiritually mature person sees them as lessons, refining the soul and deepening one’s connection with divine guidance. Every experience—whether joyful or painful—contains valuable insights that contribute to a greater understanding of God and His universe.

3. Serving Others Selflessly

Service is the natural expression of spiritual growth. As a person develops in love and wisdom, they become increasingly aware of their responsibility to others. Jesus Michael teaches that true greatness is found in selfless service, in recognizing that every act of kindness and generosity contributes to the expansion of the kingdom.

To serve others selflessly means to see every human being as part of the same divine family, regardless of social status, cultural background, or personal beliefs. It means giving without expecting anything in return, offering love and assistance simply because it is the highest expression of divine truth. Service does not have to be grand or public—it can be as simple as listening to someone in need, offering a kind word, or performing an act of generosity without recognition.

Spiritual attainment is incomplete without service, because spiritual progress is not just personal—it is collective. A person truly growing in the kingdom of God seeks to uplift others, to inspire them to grow in faith, and to contribute to the greater good of humanity. Jesus Michael exemplifies this principle through his entire life, demonstrating that service is not a duty, but a sacred privilege.

Applying Spiritual Attainment in Daily Life

To live according to Jesus Michael’s teachings, one must actively pursue spiritual growth each day. This requires introspection, intentional choices, and the willingness to prioritize eternal values over temporary concerns. Instead of striving for material success or worldly recognition, one should ask:

  • Am I growing in love, or am I still bound by selfishness and fear?
  • Am I seeking wisdom, or am I allowing external distractions to cloud my spiritual vision?
  • Am I serving others, or am I only focused on my own desires and ambitions?

Spiritual attainment is not about achieving perfection but about progressing steadily toward higher understanding and deeper connection with God. It is a lifelong journey that does not end with death, but continues into eternity, where souls will keep evolving, serving, and contributing to the divine plan of the universe.

Ultimately, spiritual attainment is the truest goal of life, because it elevates existence beyond temporary satisfaction and into eternal significance. Jesus Michael’s gospel calls each person to rise above the distractions of material existence and to live a life filled with love, wisdom, and service. Through this path, human beings discover their highest purpose and fulfill their divine destiny, not only on Earth but in the boundless journey of spiritual evolution that awaits them beyond this world.
